KG’s Blog Post #193 – 10/2/13 8:08pm (prep. for The President’s Cup)
Well, I’m lying down and watching TV in between hopping to the dumper. I turned on The Golf Channel, and I’m reminded how idiotic the reporters following golf can be. The International team can win in a heartbeat. They make it sound like it’s going to be a wipeout. It’s match play and whoever makes the most birdies will win. For God sake, they are all good. I guess they can’t help themselves, but just because you are playing for the first time means diddly. Branded Chamblee has lost his marbles – he is more interested in hearing himself and using his special vocabulary than remembering he used to be a golfer and to explain golf from our point of view so you the average guy who will never really understand how we think might get closer.
The other amazing thing is that no one is willing to just say what they think, it’s all about playing the game. The Tour or Jack blew it on 14. They should’ve built a tee that’s about 260 to fly it onto the green. If you can do that you might be tempted but where they are going to try and tease you I feel you would have to be an idiot to go for it. There’s just no room there and the left side is just impossible to up & down it. It’s funny Phil says he hits 6-iron off the tee and I use to hit 3-iron or 5-wood. Technology is scary. Jack would have been scary with this stuff.
I keep jumping around but you’re used to that by now, unless my English teacher reroutes my points. The other issue that is laughable is how they are making so much of who’s playing with who. In best ball that’s irrelevant! The biggest issue for the captains is this: the alternate shot pairings. Will be important due to the fact that all par 3’s are even & par 5’s have three odds. The drivers who are not very straight will only have 9 shots off the tee – 4 will be par3s & then on 2 other holes will be auto lay up, so he might only be hitting 3 drivers and you don’t even need drivers on those 2-6-10-14-18 either.
One great point that was made was that golf is the only sport that everyone still looks up to the older heroes of the game and actually listen to them. That’s a great bonus for golf. Last point is the fact that every player feels nervous as hell on the first tee unlike any other event and everyone will fight their ass off to win, but more important is they play hard not to embarrass themselves. Losing doesn’t kill you but playing like a pig you feel like you are a failure. That hurts the gut.
Ok I’ve said too much of nothing – God I’m like the media.
